Allison is named South Shore Women's Business Network: Networking Nova for November

We are proud to announce that our General Manager Allison Q. Guido was named the South Shore Women's Business Network's Netwokring Nova for November. Below is the article from the SSWBN's lastest newsletter.

Network Nova

‘Net-Weaver’ Allison Guido of Almar
Building and Remodeling Company

I have been with the SSWBN since 2004 or 5, so about five years. I found the Network after talking to another woman contractor I know in Pennsylvania, who said that she had joined a local networking group for women … and I thought, ”What a great idea!” So I searched on line, found SSWBN and stopped by a networking lunch.

At my very first meeting, the facilitator at my table told me to always find someone at every meeting whom you can help, or whom you can connect up with someone else. I really took that to heart: I try to really listen to what people’s wants and needs are, and to then find a way to help them with that. I also try to follow up right after the meeting with every new person I meet, and then again later on as part of my marketing. Remodeling is one of those businesses where I probably won't get a referral at every meeting, but if I can keep making connections and educating people at every meeting, when the time comes that they or someone they know needs work on their house, Almar and I will be their only call.

The Network has helped me get to know a lot of new people, and has solved a lot of my wants and needs both personally and for my business. From a business perspective, the people in the Network have helped me improve my interpersonal skills, and helped keep Almar going during the slow times. What I love about the Network is that if you have a need and put it out to the group, then someone will respond and help you.

I recommend that you all be a net-weaver. Always listen, and always find a way to help someone else. The “giver” really does gain.

I am really honored to be nominated for the Networking Nova. I want to thank everyone for this honor. And for those people whom I haven't had the chance to get to know yet, I hope we can connect soon

Octoberfest - Host by the Marshfield Chamber of Commerce

Saturday was a great day! Almar (Craig & I) had a table at the Marshfield Chamber of Commerce’s October fest. I was so happy they had to push it back a week so that we could be there. We are new to the world of community events, so we are still getting our feet wet and learning something new every time we participate.

Even though it was overcast most of the day there was a great turn out. There was lots of food and beer, a great band played and in addition to the vendors they had rides, and pumpkin painting for the kids. The vendors included everyone from crafters and Arbonne, thru interior decorators, Matthews Electric and us.

I was please to see so many new faced and introduce Almar to more people. Even though we are still Celebrating our 50th Anniversary there is seem to be a lot of people who we haven’t had the chance to meet yet, so this was a great experience for us, and I look forward to doing more of these events in the future.

To see upcoming events visit our website: http://www.almarbuilding.com/Calendar.htm or call us at 781-826-2577

Almar is a Full Service Remodeling Company, servicing the South Shore. Design Build, Additons, Kitchens, Baths, Basements, Siding, Windows, Decks, Sunrooms, and more!

We went to the Fair

So we are more than half way thru the Marshfield Fair, and I have to say our first experience at this kind of event has been both eventful and educational. 2009 has been a year of firsts for Almar on the marketing front. As part of our 50th Anniversary we held our first Client appreciation cook at the office in Hanover, now we are at the Marshfield Fair and in October we will be at the Carver Octoberfest.

I was not quite prepared for what an event like this would entail. I knew it would be a lot of work, but I think we have pulled it off pretty well. I got some great project photos blown up and we set up a large display in the back of our booth. I have always know we do pretty projects but they seem so much nicer with the photos blown up and on a nice black background. I got some awesome Almar balloons only to find out I couldn’t give them away, so they will be saved for another event soon.

A number of people have asked me “why are you doing the Marshfield Fair” and simply, we are here to reinforce to all of you that we are still here. After 50 years and the tough times lately we are still working to keep your homes working for you and your families. We’ve have gotten to talk to some great people we might not have ordinarily gotten the chance to meet face to face, and talk to people who already know Almar but didn’t realize we did this or that, or knew the quality of work we did. So old friends have been just as important as the new friends we’ve made.

It’s funny, but I love to talk about remodeling, ideas for your home, and products and all the cool things you could do. It’s like getting to do a make-over everyday. Just don’t ask me about colors cause I’ll have to refer you Paulette (the Custom Decorator) And I just love to brag about my guys and crews. They are simply the best. Mark who has been with us 20 years is so much more than family, and when it comes down to it don’t your really want someone who is like family working in your home. Someone you can trust and feel comfortable talking to about the process and any questions or concerns you might have?

It’s been a long week, long days. We have been doing our best to keep the office open regular hours and the booth manned all day. So the 7:30am to 10:00pm had worn us out. But I think it has been worth it, we have learned a lot and gotten to see a lot from a new perspective.

My hope is that these last few days prove to be as busy and eventual as the past, and I just hope that the threat of rain and tropical storm (soon to be hurricane) “Danny” doesn’t ruin the few remaining days. If you’re planning to wait till this weekend to come to the fair I’d suggest you make it down here Friday night. The weather is suppose to be great, it’s Marshfield Day there will be the battle of the bands, Demolition Derby Finals, and Wine & Roses (flower show and wine) And be sure to see Ori at the Falafel stand next to us.

About Ori The Pembroke Express today Said: "Seek out the simple booth with a handmade wooden sign declaring “Falafel,” and you will be warmly welcomed by a Middle Eastern family making superb Falafel and deeply satisfying Turkish coffee. Falafel is a seasoned fritter made with chickpeas and a heady combination of Middle Eastern spices such as baharat, cumin and paprika. These little nuggets of flavor are offered along with hummus, grape leaves and pita bread. This delightful family is traveling the country bringing homemade Middle Eastern food and a warm family welcome with them."

Design Build - One Stop Shopping

I was taking some time recently to catch up with people on facebook, when I came across a status update from one of our clients. She was seeking help from her online friends to find good architects who could help her design an In-law addition. I quickly thought to myself "OH NO! She doesn’t know about our design-build process!"

I quickly messaged her and told her that if she was looking for an architect I know a really good one. We are always happy to work with architects but some projects we find don’t need them or some client’s budgets don’t work well with the architect model. I also told her that Almar has what we call a Design Build process where we can do designs and plans in house for her as part of our one-stop-shopping experience.
Almar’s Design Build process starts with your budget and we create plans that help you visually see your project before Almar starts to build it. Our process combines the design with our remodeling knowledge right from the beginning, allowing you and Almar to have input into the project even before work gets started! As the customer, you are the most important member of our design-build team. Your wishes and ideas drive the design, materials, selection and budget. Our state of the art design software allows 3 dimensional photo-realistic renderings, site and floor plans and walk-through of your project.

The Design/Build process provides you with the convenience of working with one company to design and build your entire project. This method eliminates communications problems that often pop up between an architect and the contractor that leave you in the middle, often having to pay more to one or both of them to solve the problem.

One of the things I really like about this process is when we are done and have a set of plans you could go away on vacation and come back to have the project done exactly how it laid out in the plans. In addition to these great features.

* One point of contact and responsibility for building plans, interior design, and construction.
* Greater quality control at every step and with every choice.
* Early knowledge of firm costs, and therefore, no grand surprises late in the project.
* Build-able plans are created early on, so you can proceed with confidence.
* Costs are controlled.
* The project begins on time and ends on time.
* Your designers and professional builders have the experience with the products you will use.
* Better all around communications, from start to finish.

So don’t forget if you are thinking about that addition, expanded kitchen, bath or basement give ALmar a call first.

How to make the 2009 Tax Credit Work for You

It seems like a lot of people have heard about the 2009 Federal Tax Credit but that there is some confusion about it and how you can take advantage of it. So I recently went to a seminar to learn more about it and thought I’d pass that information along to you.

Did you know that 91% of American’s have jobs? Even with all the news about how bad off everyone is almost all American’s who want jobs have them, are still bring home a salary every week, and are still buying things. We are also seeing a lot of clients who want to take advantage of the tax credits to reduce their energy usage and long-term monthly energy costs.

The 2009 Tax Credit raised the rebate from 10% in previous years to 30% and is available for a limited time and only for certain Energy Efficient products. Because it is not a Tax Deduction but rather a Tax Credit it is much more valuable to you because you will get a dollar for dollar savings, which will be applied after adjusted gross income is calculated.

The Energy Tax Credit applies to homeowners who make eligible, energy-efficient improvements to their existing homes.

1. Can only be utilized for the taxpayer’s principal residence.
2. Only the actual product costs (of the qualifying products) are eligible; the cost of labor / installation is NOT eligible

It provides a tax credit to homeowners who purchase and install qualifying energy-efficient products in 2009 and 2010. Valid for 30% of product cost up to a maximum of $1,500

As of today, it applies to 30% of product cost up to $1,500 maximum for all improvements combined**

–Windows** = Jan. 1, 2009 – May 31, 2009 If products meet ENERGY STAR criteria
= June 1, 2009 – Dec. 31, 2010 U factor ≤ 0.30 and SHGC ≤ 0.30
–Doors** = U factor ≤ 0.30 and SHGC ≤ 0.30
–Insulation** = Meets 2009 IECC & Amendments

What will you need to keep for your records?
1. The Manufactures Certification Statement
2. The Energy Start Label
3. NFRC Label
4. And Invoice showing the product cost as charged by your contract.

So what should you know?
Did you know that as much as 40% of your homes heat loss occurs thru the walls even if you have insulated walls? Since studs make up ¼ of your homes exterior, it’s like having one entire wall with NO INSULATION! And that half of your utilities are spent on heating and cooling your home?

Why you ask? Even with insulated walls there are breaks in your thermal bridging (the framing) And what happens is air escapes thru the walls, so you are paying for it and it’s just being wasted.

So what can we do? Well you have two options. Almar can install new vinyl siding with either Foam insulation (which qualifies for the tax credit) or insulated Vinyl Siding panels (which doesn’t qualify right now but industry advocates are working on it)

Insulation Board R-values range from R-4 to R-8 per inch of thickness (2.54 cm), which is 2 to 3 times greater than most other insulating materials of the same thickness. Also, if the installation is carefully installed, foam insulation may control air infiltration more effectively than other types of insulation. Depending on the type of insulation and heat you have already you could save an additional $671 per year.

Insulated Siding reduces the heating and cooling energy loss through the walls by up to 20% and delivers up to 5 times the insulating R-value of any other siding choice. Insulated siding is actually made with a special insulating foam crested specifically to act as an energy barrier. Rigid foam insulation is form fitted behind the exterior of high quality vinyl siding so it is between the siding panel and the exterior wall to keep heating and cooling energy inside.

Insulated Windows:
Replacing with ENERGY STAR windows an average New England home can save up to $465 a year.
To qualify for the tax credit, windows, doors, and skylights placed in service after February 17, 2009 must have a U-factor and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) less than or equal to 0.30. Almar has several options for windows that will meet the Tax Credit qualifications, many of them are manufactures by Harvey Building products, which is a local company whose manufactuing plants are right here in new England.

Insulated Doors:
Almar generally reccomends Therma-Tru Insulated Doors.they are also unmatched with the best warranties in the industry. Every line of doors comes with a package of performance that is unrivaled in the industry. With an insulated door you will not only see an increase in comfort, energy efficiency and performance, you will also see an increase in curb appeal. Our fiberglass and steel entry doors will add beauty and security to your home. In fact, you can increase the perceived value of your home by more than $24,000 just by adding a Therma-Tru entry door system. Learn More.

Roofing:
Reflective asphalt shingles that also meet ENERGY STAR requirements are eligible for the tax credit. CertainTeed cool roofing products form a barrier between the sun and your energy bills by reducing your roof’s temperature during the hottest months of the year. And that means lower energy costs (as much as 20%) and greater savings over the life of your roof. Plus, each of
CertainTeed’s cool roofing products, Landmark Solaris™ (all colors), Landmark™ (Silver Birch, Mist White and Star White), Star White in our CT20™, XT25™, XT30™ product lines, and CoolStar low-slope roofing, qualify for a rebate under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA).

Solar Water Heating:
Sunshine is free. Imagine using it to heat your water. ENERGY STAR qualified solar water heaters can cut your water heating bills in half and reduce your carbon footprint. The average life expectancy of qualified solar water heating systems is 20 years, much longer than standard gas or electric storage water heaters.

A 2006 U.S. Census report showed that a family of 4 with an eletrcia hot water tank could save an average of $410 a year with solar hot water. But remember that was 3 years ago and energy cost have spiked since then imagine what the average savings is today!

There are some other products that are also eligible for Tax Credit you can read more about them on the Energy Star website.

Since energy costs have been rising and will continue to go through the roof (pardon the pun), you need relief NOW. Take a look at what’s been happening to your heating and cooling budget over just a 10-year period.

1998 2008 % Increase
Electricity
(cents/KWH) $0.0672 $0.0939 40%
Natural Gas ($/MCF) $7.4500 $15.1900 104%
Propane (cents/gal.) $0.2570 $1.6100 525%
Heating Oil (cents/gal.) $0.3840 $3.2100 735%

Based on Department of Energy historical data

You cannot afford not to make your house more energy Efficient. Your energy cost keep going up, but can your income keep up? You need to seal off “The Great Energy Leak” and save money on your bills by upgrading your home with Insulated Windows, Insulated Doors, Foundation Ceiling & Roof Insulation and wrapping your home in an insulation blanket all while taking advantage of the Federal Tax Credit.

Why Now? Why Not?

I know people are still concerned about the economy and what’s going to happen next. The economy has been beaten up, for sure. But all indicators (even from the news media!!!) have been that we are on our way to not only an improving but to a booming economy once again. If you have been considering a remodeling or renovation project on your home, this news is GREAT for you!! And it is why now is the best time ever to jump off that fence you’re sitting on and move forward with your project!!

Why NOW???

1. Consider this: That remodeling project that you have been dreaming of can cost you up to 20% less today than it would have a year ago. It might seem wise to wait for the economy to turn around before beginning a renovation, but when it does turn around – and indications are that it’s already started to happen - waiting too long will mean that today's discounts will no longer be available.

2. You can make your home more energy efficient now and save money for decades to come. And you can even reduce your monthly expenses immediately.

With The Federal Tax credits, which are only good in 2009, you can save an extra $1,500 on qualifying new windows, doors, skylights, HVAC systems, roofs, insulation and/or water heater.
AND there is a 30% Federal and 15% State Tax credit on a new Solar Hot Water System.*

3. We’ve been there for you and your home for the last 50 years, and with your help we’re looking forward to being here for you as long as your house is!

We’ve told you to watch out of the low-price scam, the one-man guy in truck - and now you know why. When the home-improvement business was going gangbusters, anyone with a pickup truck and a metal clipboard could call himself a general contractor. He didn't need experience, skill, or good working relationships with subcontractors to find business. Times are tougher, and it's these marginal guys who have gone under - nowhere to be found in case of a problem.

4. Almar is looking to fill our schedule and keep our team working. Instead of waiting months, we can get you project started quicker – and we’ll deliver for you with the best customer service in years. We don’t want to add to that unemployment rate, so we’ve been offering some of the best prices you’ll see for a long time to come.

5. With the fall - off in demand, construction materials are readily available, and many have come down in price. BUT we are starting to get word from our suppliers that prices are starting to creep up already. So we are encouraging people to take action now, before the increases come.

6. If you have three things— A good credit rating, at least 20 percent equity in your home, and proof of income—lenders are more eager than ever to extend fat lines of credit.

According to Joel Sugarman, Mortgage Broker for locally owned Rockland Trust bank; “Facts indicate now may be much better than later to obtain financing for renovation because rates are at historic lows; the availability of equity in one's home, an often used source of funds, is declining with property values; and lending guidelines in the areas of credit, loan to value, and debt to income continue to tighten."

7. Utilizing your home for your “staycation” is very popular this summer. A staycation (or stay-cation, or stacation) is when your family stays at home and relaxes at home or takes day trips from their home to area attractions. Staycations are a great opportunity to utilize your renovated space, finished basement, home theatre, new kitchen or new deck!!! This new view on making your home an Oasis have achieved high popularity in the current hard times.

8. Let’s be honest - it’s going to take a while for Real Estate sales to get back to where they once were. Many of our customers ate coming to us saying that they have decided to stay put and make their current home their dream home. And that means you can truly enjoy the improvements you make. We are hearing people say that they really want to enjoy being at home, and staying at home.

9. If and when you do put your house on the market, shoppers will appreciate the upgrades you've made. Making improvements now will best position you to make your move as soon as the market picks up, and will allow you to get more for your house when you do sell. While everyone else is calling contractors for those get-set-to-sell projects, you won't be scrambling. Your house will be ready. And you will have had the enjoyment of the improvements and cost savings in the meantime!!

You’ve been waiting and waiting to get something started. It’s time to stop waiting and start moving, take advantage of the current situation and get your project done while the deals are still available.

If you’d like more information about getting your project started call Craig at 781-826-2577.

FREE Hot Water with a Solar System

Almar is pleased to announce that we are now carrying Solar Hot Water Systems from GroSolar, a New England Company.

Solar Hot Water systems will help our clients reduce their monthly bills by utilizing the sun rather than non renewable resources like oil or electricity. And since the sun will be around for something like 5 Billion more years you don't have to worry about running out of hot water.

Our "groSolar systems offer clean, sustainable energy solutions which help reduce your impact on the environment while saving you money. Reliable solar hot water (SHW) systems reduce your energy use, providing independence from traditional heating sources. Domestic hot water is the second highest energy cost in a typical household.

A solar hot water production system can provide enough energy to meet 70% of your hot water needs, even in cold climates. In addition to saving money, groSolar’s solar solutions also reduce your reliance on imported fossil fuels and electricity, therefore helping to beat global warming.

SHW systems are:
Reliable: they are designed to provide hot water using the clean and safe power of the sun first and other fuel sources as backup.

Simple: Everything you need is one phone call away: expert installation, premium equipment and expert engineering.

Renewable: The sun rises every day and provides the cleanest and greenest energy available. Remember - renewable energy has a fixed cost; the sun may rise but the price of its rays do not!
Affordable: Tax credits and state incentives reduce your cost, making SHW affordable everywhere.

Aesthetically Pleasing: These solutions look fabulous on every home. Businesses may also integrate onto any type of roof. "*

For more information about your Solar Hot Water options call Terry at 781-826-2577; almar@almarbuilding.com

Improving the Quality of Natural Light In Your Home.

Rooms filled with natural light and fresh air are more beautiful, spacious and uplifting to our spirits. "With added natural light and ventilation from skylights, homeowners have attractive and effective tools to balance the light and improve ventilation in their homes," says Joe Patrick, senior product manager with VELUX America.

Here are some tips on the product categories available, how to choose the right product, installation information and tips on energy efficiency.

Product Selection
Skylights are used for overhead, out-of-reach applications or with in-reach applications where egress is not required. Available models include electric or manual venting, fixed with or without ventilation flap, and fixed for replacing faded plastic bubbles with clear, energy-efficient glass.

There are also models specially designed to meet code for safe use in hurricane-prone areas as well as models with electrochromic glass that can be lightened or darkened by remote control and that don't restrict the view to the sky.

Roof windows are for in-reach applications offering egress as in finished attics. VELUX SUN TUNNEL™ skylights are useful when a view to the outside is not needed as with closets, laundry rooms, pantries, hallways and second baths.

How to Choose
Remember to consider your ceiling style and roof pitch and whether your home is constructed with trusses or rafters. It all depends on your needs:

o Electric or manual venting skylights are designed for any room requiring natural ventilation (such as kitchens and baths), where electric operation is desired.

o Fixed skylights are great for visually expanding areas such as hallways, stairwells and other closed-in, dark spaces that can be transformed with natural light and sky views. They provide an economical alternative in creating a spacious home that is filled with natural light.

Accessories
There are many different accessory options available depending on what your wants and needs are. Ranging from Cellular, and solar shades, controls for the light including translucent or light block shades, insect screens, venetian blinds and exterior heat block awnings. Electric skylights, can be operated by remote control.

GlazingEnergy-efficient tempered safety glass resists condensation, protects against fading and won't discolor, leak, or allow drafts. Models with electrochromic glass that darkens by remote control to reduce light and solar gain without restricting the view to the sky are also available.

Installation
There are local Velux certified installers in your area such as Almar Building who offer not only terrific service, but also great communication, professional service, and 5 Year Instillation Warranties.

Ice Damming

With all the snow and melting we’ve been having this winter a lot of homes have been having ice damming MUCH - worse than in previous years.

So what is an Ice Dam and what can we do about them?
Ice Dam effect is a condition that occurred every few years when we get heavy snow or constant snow that builds up and then it rains and freezes, or so much snow is on the roof that the sun no longer melts it and it melts from below due to an overheated attic, usually a result of poor ventilation or less than adequate insulation.

You may have noticed that a lot of houses have icicles right now. The icicles themselves are harmless, but that build-up is forming a dam, which is higher than your gutters preventing melting snow and ice from draining. This blocked water can work under your roofing and into your home.

What Kind of Problems Could You Experience?
If the water works its way under the roofing the water causes a host of problems you can and can't see.

Some of the easiest problems to find include gutters sagging from the weight of the ice, loose roof shingles, and can result in rot. One of the most serious problems you can't see. Water dampens and compresses wall and attic insulation, lowering R-values and increasing heating costs. Even small amounts of moisture feed nasty mold and mildew growths that can affect your health and lead to major structural damage in your house.

What Should you Check and/or Do?
You should make sure your attic has adequate ventilation so any warm moist air reaching the attic space will escape before it melts the snow on the roof. Clean existing gable or ridge vents of insulation or dust, and clear insulation from soffit vents so cool air can be drawn into the attic through the eaves. The ideal condition in an attic is for it to be the same tempeture as the outside air.

Also, make sure gutters are empty of debris so melting water flows down and away from the house. Almar can install Leaf Relief gutter protection so you don’t have to worry about this every year.

If the above measures don't work, you can replace the first three feet of shingle courses (rows) with an ice shield barrier. For new roofs, consider using a rubber membrane instead of felt along the edge of the roof.

If You Notice:
During winter, if you notice snow melting off your roof faster than your neighbor's, you may need to deal immediately with ice damming. The goal is to remove standing snow. For one-story homes, a roof rake is the easiest way. Installing roof heat tape along the lower 1 to 3 feet of the roof also will melt ice. It will add to your electric bill, too, but it's less expensive than letting water get into your home.

Who Should You Contact?
All of these problems can be resolved by your friends at Almar Building and Remodeling Co. Unfortunately it is to late to solve the problem once the ice dam has developed. All that can be done at that point is to chop through the dam and release the build up water.

If you think you have this problem, please call ALmar (781-826-2577) and we will send someone out to inspect the property and see what can be done either right away or at a later date to prevent it in the future.
